Position Summary


Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Software DevOps Engineer to help support our diverse internal development efforts. The ideal candidate will have a blend of experience with site reliability engineering, database administration, and security coordination. This position will help to maintain and grow the infrastructure running our applications and supporting our internal software development and DevOps team. They will work with our developers to deliver repeatable and reliable deployments by transitioning manual efforts into automated processes.


This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, CA *remote work can be considered*

Your Mission

  • Work with a team of software developers, DevOps, and IT to implement a set of tools to produce reliable, repeatable software deliverables to assure mission success and safety to the public and crew.
  • Ensure system reliability for all supported software and infrastructure
  • Help other teams develop tools and workflows to produce repeatable results
  • Work to get developers the tools they need to achieve their goals and produce scalable projects
  • Author and implement deployment processes
  • Participate in database oversite: maintaining and testing backups, tracking query performance, and contributing to product design and upgrades
  • Documenting systems and workflows
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world, and worlds beyond, a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) or equivalent experience
  • Linux systems administration experience, Ubuntu/Debian generally preferred
  • Experience working with Jenkins or other CI/CD Pipeline tools
  • Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience working with Git
  • General experience with programming or scripting languages (C/C++, Matlab, Python, LabView) for spontaneous development of support tools
  • Strong troubleshooting abilities
  • Security minded outlook
  • Drive to constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members.
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment; Must be able available for on call and off hour support including nights and weekends when needed
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness/weirdness

  • Experience with microservice architectures
  • Experience with Configuration Management tools like: Ansible or Chef
  • Experience working with Coverity or similar static/dynamic analysis tools
  • Experience working with Atlassian tools like Jira, Bitbucket, and Confluence
  • Understanding of networking: including TCP/IP, UDP and Routing
  • Understanding of test driven software development
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

Salary Range

$85,000 - $115,000

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
