Engineering Manager, Systems Verification

 

Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Systems Verification Engineeering Manager.   If you join us in this position, you will be responsible for the operation of Hardware-In-The-Loop (HITL) testing all of the avionics components, Flight Software, GNC models, Launch Software and more!  This is an opportunity to bring your deep component- and system-level design, operation and project leadership skills to the continued success of the LauncherOne program

 

This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Provide leadership across multiple HITL platforms to support simultaneous missions simulations and provide test case execution and reports to internal groups across the company
  • Lead the system-level qualification for our launch vehicles, carrier aircraft and ground support equipment
  • Lead the continuous improvement initiatives to optimize HITL platform performance and operations efficiency
  • Lead the development of the test automation infrastructure and lead the efforts to automate standard test procedures
  • Manage the reporting of test execution results to the executive level of the organization
  • Coach junior team members in technical aspects of HITL and career development
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • BS in Electrical, Computer, Aerospace or comparable Engineering in a related field
  • 8+ years of experience in test, hardware simulators or system level simulation
  • 4+ years of team leadership experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in Hardware-In-The-Loop methodologies and electronics control principles
  • Proficiency developing and managing resource-loaded work-breakdown structures and simultaneous schedules across multiple programs
  • Proficiency developing hardware and software test architectures and frameworks for increased efficiency and reliability, experienced with integrated hardware/software system test methodologies
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management experience
  • Demonstrated project management using agile principles
  • Strong Jira project administration and management proficiency
  • Working knowledge of communication protocols and instrumentation hardware abstraction layers such as GPIB, Ethernet, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, UDP, IVI, DAQmx, NI-Switch.
  • Ability to communicate across all levels and disciplines
  • Experience with a defect tracking database
  • Experience with a version control system
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Programming experience with scripting language e.g. Python, Matlab
  • 5+ years of design experience with respect to test racks (electrical and mechanical)
  • Experience with confluence, sharepoint or similar team workspace collaboration environment
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

Salary Range

$140,000 - $170,000
