Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Director of Test & Launch Operations. If you join us in this position, you will support our launch activities by prioritizing operations and objective to accomplish safe and timely launches. We are looking for someone who can strategically navigate ambiguity, exercise flexible problem-solving skills, and promote Virgin Orbit’s mission of Opening Space for Everyone. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, CA with regular travel to other Virgin Orbit locations and Spaceports around the world.

Your Mission

  • Virgin Orbit focal for leading all engine testing, integrated rocket testing, and launch operations
  • Lead a team of engineers and technicians supporting all Test & Launch Operations
  • Define and shape future international and domestic launch processes
  • Oversee the development of engine test and launch automation, processes, and procedures
  • Responsible for test and safety of all ground support equipment
  • Lead and mentor employees at all levels in both technical and organizational functions
  • Support various design, test/launch readiness, and data reviews
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of professional experience
  • 5+ years of leadership or management experience
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Experience in low-cost commercial space system ventures
  • Logistics of shipping unique hardware worldwide
  • Ability to procure and implement designs
  • Familiarity with process and instrumentation diagrams
  • Experience with generating and executing test plans
  • Experience as a test conductor during vehicle fueling
  • Experience with vehicle-level integration, test, and launch operations of flight hardware
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment

Salary Range

$150,000 - $180,000
