Position Summary

Virgin Orbit is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Manager, Payroll.  If you join us in this position, you will be responsible for company payroll related activities and projects. Reporting to the Total Rewards Director in the People Department, you will not only provide oversight to all payroll related activity, and processing, you will also be the analytical and functional expertise for payroll, time-keeping, systems, and function as an expert resource to the payroll team.  Own Payroll projects involving systems; creating and deliver training to the Virgin Orbit leaders and all workforce, create efficiencies throughout, automate and streamline processes, public company audit preparation, readiness, and documentation. We’ll also need you to provide your expertise with stock, equity and ESPP payroll, benefits, leave payroll processing, system implementations, multi-state tax administration, and on-going analysis of effectiveness of payroll programs.  This role is for a hands-on manager with the ability to solve and flex in a dynamic work environment.  Great attention to detail, excellent people skills and an ability to respond to the business needs clearly and thoughtfully.  In this role you will have to communicate a lot, have freedom to think outside the box and ignite your entrepreneurial side!  This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.


Your Mission

Your Part of the Mission:

  • Manage the payroll team, all company payroll, and time-keeping operations.
  • Ensure accurate calculation of wages, tax withholdings, and company deductions. Ensures proper governmental reporting and compliance. Prepares statistical reports as needed.
  • Liaison between Payroll, Total Rewards, People Team, Stock Administration, and Accounting team.
  • Responsibility of all payroll processing, systems, training, and all other payroll functions.
  • Conducts payroll data audits, investigation, and analysis of payroll issues to determine the root cause to earmark gaps in already existing solutions and support the development of new measures to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Special payroll processing activities (pay period, monthly, quarterly, monthly & annual loads, adhoc checks, validation - year end, etc.), including payroll reconciliations (stock, bonuses, etc.)
  • Develop reports to meet HR, Finance and Payroll requests and respond to management inquiries for data and/or reports (internal and external)
  • Assist with day to day activities including but not limited to; new employee set up, respond to manager and teammate inquiries, Time Management functions, garnishments, 401k reconciliations, audits and well as annual true-up processes and review of plan documents.
  • Decipher and troubleshoot payroll issues or questions, prioritize demands, and articulate recommendations clearly.
  • Strong experience with new state set up, and all applicable processes associated.  Manage international travelers with time-keeping complexities and travel pay.
  • Develop and deliver company training to all levels of management and full workforce (driven by company policies, payroll procedures and Federal, State and Local labor and tax laws).

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or related experience equivalent
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)
  • 10+ years' experience in Payroll and relevant HRIS system experience
  • At least 3 years of supervising or managing in the areas of payroll or finance.
  • California wage and hour law expertise.
  • Knowledge of US federal and state laws. Working knowledge of employee benefits administration, taxation, and reporting requirements.
  • Must have experience with SOX preparation and compliance, and processes including documentation and managing of audits.
  • Knowledge of UKG and various modules preferred or other comparable systems.
  • Working knowledge of audits, preaudit preparation and audit best practices.
  • Must be able to independently create payroll analytics, create Excel functions including conditional formatting; pivot tables; functional formulas and report writing.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Must be able to work varying hours/shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
