Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Quality Engineer, Machining. If you join us in this position, you will assist in supporting, developing and improving all machining operations for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.


Your Mission

  • Interface with manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain to ensure that requirements are met and correctly documented
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain VO’s Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Drive process improvement projects in a team-based environment
  • Develop and maintain required process metrics
  • Analyze non-conformance trends to track issues and evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions
  • Review and approve drawings, manufacturing process plans, and discrepancies to ensure quality requirements are being met
  • Perform Quality process audits, including planning, preparing, executing, reporting results, and follow-up
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or equivalent technical degree
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, or equivalent role
  • Formal training in GD&T/ASMEY14.5 standards
  • A strong, working knowledge of GD&T standards and engineering drawings
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Demonstrated experience using Quality tools such as fishbone analysis, 8D, PFMEA, Paretos, Gage R&R, and SPC charts
  • Familiarity with the AS9100 quality standard and experience working in an organization that is AS9100 certified
  • Demonstrated innovation in process improvements, knocking down barriers, and tackling challenging problems
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
