Tool Maker


Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Tool Maker 1st shift within the Production team.  If you join us in this position, you will support the manufacture, modification, proof load and maintenance of tools / fixtures, to produce LauncherOne launch vehicles.  The ideal candidate will be experienced in the fabrication and development of jigs, fixtures, ground support equipment and tooling that is used for the precise assembly and manufacturing of metallic and composite parts and assemblies.  Successful candidates will have experience working in fast paced integrated product teams with development engineering, supply chain, quality, and production.

This is a Full-Time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Fabricate and maintain tooling to support all rocket production activity.
  • Work with internal and external teams to ensure tooling gets built and implemented on time and meets build requirements. Tooling will range from material handling carts, metallic and composite layup tools, trim and drill fixtures, assembly tooling with motion systems, mobile ground support equipment, to 100,000-pound class test stands made of heavy structural steel.
  • Be hands-on with initial builds, supporting implementation of tools onto the shop floor.
  • Suggest and incorporate changes in design to improve manufacturability, error-proofing, ergonomic handling, efficiency, and production.
  • Provide support to root-cause build issues in development and production.
  • Support the specification, evaluation, and implementation of new capital equipment for the production process.
  • Assemble components using bolts, dowels, clamps, rivets, adhesives, welding, or other method.
  • Make and locate drill bars with metrology for drilling precision holes.
  • Sanding, benching, painting, engraving, and part marking of tools with stencils and tags.
  • Pneumatic and vacuum system plumbing. Pressure testing and helium leak checking.
  • Open, view and measure features in tool designs using solid modelling CAD systems such as NX (preferred), CATIA, SOLIDWORKS or similar.
  • Read, understand, and follow detailed schematics, drawings, MBD / PMI, advanced GD&T and instructions.
  • Align, collect data, best fit, set details and create reports using inspection equipment.
  • Check work after completion of each operation in job and/or completed job to ensure it is complete per drawing.
  • Communicates with engineers on requirements / technical questions and management to report on weekly status.

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • Able to use precision calibrated tools – torque wrenches, micrometers, and calipers.
  • Use of precision metrology systems; Laser Tracker, ROMER arm and 3D scanners.
  • Experience with; mill, lathe, press brake and other fabrication equipment.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.


… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • Strong mathematical, basic computer, problem solving and decision-making skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skill in operating and manipulating machinery and various hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity.
  • Basic computer skills and understanding of work ticketing and reporting systems.
  • Experience setting up new production facilities or work cells.
  • Self-motivated, hands-on person that works well within a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’.
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team.
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness.


Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work varying hours/shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs (unassisted).
  • Valid CA driver’s license required with clean driving record and may be required to travel to other locations.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
