Position Summary 


Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Avionics Harness Engineer (Zuken). If you join us in this position, you will be part of a strong Avionics Engineering team, helping with the design and release of wire harness schematics.  This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.


This is a Full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California

Your Mission

  • Design and release of wire harness schematics using Zuken  E3 software
  • Study product requirements and create functional requirements for wire harnesses
  • Work with Board designers to transform the net lists into pinouts for units
  • Study electrical loads and other system requirements to select proper wiring
  • Utilizing internal custom tools, design electrical system wiring, wire lists, etc
  • Work with 3D layout engineers to confirm optimized design for interferences, Hi vib environments, ease of installation, and other design concerns
  • Participate in wire harness design reviews to ensure compatibility with system design
  • Conduct feasibility studies for requested features before confirming functional requirements
  • Maintain detailed schedules that support overall product schedules and properly communicate status to management
  • Create and update technical documentation, test plans, and test results
  • Support prototype builds through rapid prototyping of wire harnesses, troubleshooting prototypes, and other similar activities
  • Work on a team to complete projects with high quality while maintaining schedules
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Requires BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in harness design, or related field of study
  • Knowledge and experience with Zuken E3 or mentor graphics or Solidworks Electrical
  • Experience with system architecture design is required
  • Knowledge of  MIL 38999 standards, Nasa 8739.4 or equivalent specs
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
  • Must be able to work varying hours/shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 15lbs (unassisted).
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
