Senior Project Manager - Factory Development


Position Summary 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Senior Project Manager - Factory Development to lead our factory development and growth to support aggressive increases in our Launcher One production rate.  The factory development includes footprint expansion, infrastructure development, and the identification, procurement and installation of capital equipment.  The PM will integrate inputs from the engineering, manufacturing, tooling, and facilities teams to develop and lead execution of an integrated project plan. This role will be a highly visible, cross-functional position, and reporting to the Sr. Director of Supply Chain   This role will also work hand in hand with the facilities & Logistics team and management day to day. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.


This is a Full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California launch test and operations site in beautiful Mojave, California.

Your Mission

  • Lead VO factory development with respect to facility growth plan, infrastructure, and installation of manufacturing equipment.
  • Gather and integrate requirements data concerning facility and equipment specifications, company or government restrictions, and required schedules. Integrate these inputs into a project master plan.
  • Coordinate closely with the Facilities, Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain and other teams on project inputs, progress, and risks, ensuring clarity of task objectives and ownership.
  • Prepare Scopes of Work and supporting documents to source, approved designs, construction, and equipment to include related services.
  • Review proposals, estimated costs, including design, equipment, installation, construction, and other related costs.
  • Forecast and report on project status, including key project metrics for Risk, Cost, and Schedule.
  • Produce and implement risk mitigation and schedule recovery plans as required.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities engineering, manufacturing engineering, or construction management.
  • Leadership experience as an interdisciplinary project or product manager.
  • Project management experience that includes leading cross-functional teams, building integrated schedules, creating and managing to budgets.
  • Experience with management of construction and commissioning of equipment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Microsoft Project or similar project management software.
  • Creative problem solver, ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, excellent people and negotiation skills.
  • Experience interfacing with Production, Engineering, Finance, Supply Chain, and Senior Leadership.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.

  • Master’s degree in either an engineering or business field of study.
  • Experience with the design and construction of cleanrooms.
  • Experience interfacing with local and state government agencies for building and equipment installation projects.
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’.

  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness.


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
