Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a Senior Software Test Engineer (Systems Verification) with a focus in software test development and automation. This position will be focused on the development of software verification tools, primarily for the Autonomous Flight Safety System, and will support the Systems Engineering team in software test requirement verification. This position is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.

 

This is a full-time position at Virgin Orbit’s aerospace facility in Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Develop and maintain automated tests in Python to verify Flight Software Code related to Virgin Orbit’s Automated Flight Safety System (AFSS).
  • Lead best practices and innovation in software test verification tools across the Systems team.
  • Work with engineers in other disciplines such as Software, Avionics Hardware, Propulsion, and GN&C to understand the systems under test.
  • Interface with the flight software application written in C++.
  • Assist in troubleshooting efforts of test verification tools and flight software code.
  • Review code submissions from other software engineers.
  • Support team deliverables and reporting for test verification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and 5+ years of experience
  • Proficient in Python.
  • Proficient with object-oriented languages and design patterns.
  • Knowledge of modern C++ in an embedded development environment.
  • Knowledge of networking systems and protocols (e.g., OSI model, TCP/IP, UDP, Ethernet, Time-Triggered Ethernet, etc.).
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

  • Experience designing software from concept through delivery; full lifecycle development of new systems is a plus.
  • Experience with MATLAB data processing and scripts.
  • High level of proficiency with Git; experience with a pull request workflow is a plus.
  • Experience in using issue tracking systems such as Jira.
  • Analytical approach to debugging and familiarity with available debugging tools.
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience in production environment following agile practices and light weight software development methods.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’, but work well as a Team Player.

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
