Manager, Supplier Quality Engineering

 

Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Manager, Supplier Quality Engineering. If you join us in this position, you will support the development and manufacturing of liquid based rocket engines for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. The ideal candidate will be experienced in Supplier Quality Assurance in support of Production and R&D efforts across a diverse supplier base and the related commodities. Successful candidates will have experience working in fast paced integrated product teams with development engineering, supply chain and internal quality. Experience in state of the art machining, processes and the supplier base will be necessary to lead a Grow/Sustain/Exit Supply Chain strategy that supports production efforts.  This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Lead and coach a team of high-performing Supplier Quality Engineers and promote their professional development and growth
  • Lead the effort on developing organizational strategies to improve and maintain supplier performance
  • Establish and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through data driven methodologies in order to identify and pursue systemic improvement opportunities within our supply base
  • Provide technical liaison in various engineering designs and processes, working closely with the internal engineering teams and the supplier to improve quality and costs
  • Serve as a leader in driving methodical approach to root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective actions to eliminate supplier non-conformances
  • Develop criteria and establish robust process for supplier quality audit and source inspection programs
  • Lead and coach a team of high-performing Supplier Quality team and promote their professional development and growth
  • Develop and mature core supplier quality processes for a complex and growing supply base
  • Work closely with the Inspection teams to resolve discrepancies and implement robust receiving inspection plans
  • Collaborate and guide the Supply Chain team in source evaluations and risk assessments based on, but not limited to, supplier status, performance history, source availability, and material criticality
  • Communicate and provide supplier quality performance metrics to senior management
  • Provide alternative sources and processes that will improve cost, delivery and or technical challenges
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science or related field experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in Supplier Quality, Quality Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • 3-5 years of previous management experience required 
  • Experience in a production “ramp-up” environment
  • Demonstrated experience in new product introductions from development to production
  • Creative problem solver and able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated experience in DFM techniques to support reduced cost and lean manufacturing
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
  • Must know how to determine proper evaluation of suppliers and materials at both low and high production rates
  • Experience in with working with pre/post design of parts and fixtures for use in production environment
  • Familiarity with ISO9001 / AS9100 Quality Management System
  • Experience with AS9102 First Article Inspection
  • Strong knowledge of metrology & measurement techniques, GD&T, MSA, GR&R, SPC, FMEA
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)
  • Must be able to travel as needed to support supplier activities
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Experience in aerospace/aviation is preferred (will consider automotive, consumer goods, or similar)
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing techniques and development
  • Experience with new product introductions in support of Propulsion, Structures, Avionics and Flight Operations is highly desired
  • Exposure to other multiple commodities and sources highly desirable
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
