Rocket Engineering Principal

 

Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Rocket Engineering Principal. This role is for a very organized technical leader with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. In this position you will be responsible for leading and coordinating the end-to-end design, definition and development of the LauncherOne rocket system on behalf of engineering.  The Engineering Rocket Lead will be accountable for leading the technical, financial and schedule aspects of rocket build from inception to delivery on behalf of engineering.  You will partner directly with our Supply Chain and Production teams to ensure issues are resolved proactively and dependencies are understood and pre-coordinated.  You will also partner with our Mission Management organization to ensure we provide products that meet the needs of our customers and fulfill mission objectives.  This role is for a technical leader desiring exposure to the end-to-end development and delivery of the LauncherOne system.  This position will report to the director of Systems Engineering and Development, within engineering. 

 

This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

 

Your Mission

  • Provide technical and programmatic leadership across the full product lifecycle of a rocket from requirements baseline to post flight data review
  • Leverage great project management, technical and people skills to coordinate, drive and achieve program success
  • Develop integrated strategies that fit within the cost and schedule confines of the program, while still meeting the technical requirements of industry standards and best practices
  • Lead engineering cost & scheduling exercises to help support financial projection efforts
  • Provide day to day tactical direction to accommodate late breaking changes and manage bandwidth constraints
  • Collaborate with engineering departments to ensure appropriate resources are allocated to complete deliverables for your rocket(s)
  • Coordinate engineering inputs and deliverables required to support program, launch and mission design and readiness reviews
  • Partner with supply chain and production to ensure accurate schedules are defined, dependencies are understood, and objectives can be achieved

  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space

  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Masters of Science degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or related discipline plus a minimum of 10 years of industry experience
  • Knowledge of the design, analysis, fabrication, and test of thermal protection systems
  • Experience in low cost commercial space system ventures
  • Experience with air launched space launch vehicles
  • Experience leading projects and teams through successful execution to completion
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
