Materials & Processes Engineer, Structures

 

Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Materials & Processes Engineer, Structures. If you join us in this position, you will assist in the design and analysis of structural and mechanical systems for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. The Materials & Processes Engineer will develop materials for primary and secondary structures, high pressure/ cryogenic plumbing, aero surfaces, and thermal/hot structure under the direction of Structures Engineering Management.  The ideal candidate must have current and/or recent hands-on experience with composite materials fabrication and test. Additionally, they should have experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computer Aided Design (CAD). Finally, they should demonstrate a strong background in mechanical design, analysis, test, and manufacturing. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Develop new processes for the fabrication of composite elements and assemblies
  • Test and characterize new materials for their suitability
  • Evaluate and source materials for new applications with an eye towards reduction in cost and lead time
  • Perform failure analysis of non-conforming hardware
  • Design the vehicle structural elements and configurations in concert with other engineering disciplines
  • Assistance in the development of manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures
  • Launch and mission operations support

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Strong expertise in Finite Element Analysis using industry tools such as FEMAP, PATRAN, NASTRAN, and ANSYS
  • Strong skills in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) drafting skills
  • Knowledge of the design, analysis, fabrication, and test of composite and metallic structures
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
