Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Quality Engineer, Integration. If you join us in this position, you will assist in supporting, developing and improving final integration and acceptance test processes for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.


Your Mission

  • Provide quality oversight and support for integration of mechanical subassemblies, propulsion and avionics systems into LauncherOne
  • Interface with manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain to ensure that requirements are met and correctly documented
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain VO’s Quality Management System
  • Drive process improvement projects in a team-based environment
  • Develop and maintain required process metrics
  • Coordinate with customers on product quality issues, escapes and development of corrective actions
  • Manage the non-conformance landscape, escalate issues as appropriate, and evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions
  • Perform Quality process audits, including planning, preparing, executing, reporting results, and follow-up
  • Manage configuration of assemblies as they are integrated on the shop floor

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • At least 3 years of experience working in an aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Knowledgeable regarding composite and metallic fabrication and assembly processes
  • In-depth understanding of the manufacturing methods, materials, testing, qualification and quality issues involved in aerospace production
  • Attention to detail and follow through
  • Knowledge of AS9100 or other relevant quality standards
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

  • At least 3 years of experience in a Quality Assurance role
  • Basic understanding of a variety of NDT methods
  • Experience with TeamCenter, Siemens NX and Oracle
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and paperless/electronic work instructions
  • Knowledge of mechanical assembly, fluid systems, and avionics systems integration
  • Demonstrated innovation in process improvements, knocking down barriers, and tackling challenging problems
  • Creative problem solver; able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements:

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
