Lead Propulsion Technician, 1st Shift

 

Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a Lead Propulsion Technician, 1st Shift who possess a combination of strong mechanical knowledge, hand-on experience and ability to adapt and respond to changing work situation and environment.  The Lead Propulsion Technician is responsible for leading an awesome & talented crew of technicians to accomplish daily goals and rocket engine testing.

 

This is a full-time position at our rocket test site in Mojave, California. 

 

Your Mission

  • Manage team of technicians ensuring daily tasks are clearly defined and executed to meet test schedule
  • Mentor technicians through motivation and guidance to help them achieve their goals
  • Provide hands-on support for building, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting equipment such as pumps, tanks, valves, regulators, relief valves, and plumbing related to the LOX, RP-1, Helium, Nitrogen, and Ground Support System.
  • Must be capable of troubleshooting electrical and mechanical components
  • Work closely with manufacturing and design engineering to improve processes and product design
  • Ability to follow procedures and create a safe working environment
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
  • Ability to train and lead team members, be willing to lead by example and jump in to help when required
  • Must be proactive, always looking to improve the workplace, including safety and processes required for day-to-day operation

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 5 years of experience in fluid system, electrical and/or operation (or equivalent)
  • Previous leadership experience a plus
  • Experience working around high pressure system
  • Certification or similar within aerospace, aviation or automotive
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shift and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods- 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

 

… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • Certifications or similar within aerospace, aviation or automotive
  • Graduated from a technical college or other recognized apprenticeship
  • Experience in the aerospace industry, aviation, military or other high-reliability operating environment preferred
  • Experience with pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices; mechanical and electrical systems; Propulsion engines
  • Experience with liquid rocket fabrication and assembly
  • Experience with pneumatic/hydraulic system fabrication
  • Able to use precision calibrated tools – torque wrenches, micrometers and calipers
  • Skill in operating and manipulating machinery and various hand and power tools requiring manual dexterity
  • Ability to determine and obtain correct type and size fasteners
  • Ability to read, understand and follow detailed schematics, drawings and instructions
  • Ability to check work after completion of each operation in job and/or completed job to ensure it is complete per drawing
  • Experience with forklifts, cranes and heavy equipment is a plus
  • Strong mathematical, basic computer, problem solving and decision making skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
