Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (www.virginorbit.com) is seeking an Engineering Manager, Flight Software  to lead the design and implementation of FSW for an air launched rocket. Launch Software includes interfacing with Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) consisting of National Instruments DAQ hardware, LabVIEW Software, and desktop stations in the Mission Control Center. Launch Control will be in Long Beach, CA for all missions worldwide. 

 

This is a full-time position at Virgin Orbit's aerospace facility in Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Lead a team to do the following:
    • Provide Software to manage all aspects of command and control
    • Review test/flight data and compare to predictions
    • Lead or contribute to anomaly resolutions as needed
    • Maintain a worldwide network of ground stations to support all missions
    • Management of subcontractors
    • Assist in the development of integration and launch processes and procedures
    • Participate on console for Launches in the Mission Control Center
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • 8 years of engineering experience in relevant areas
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in relevant areas
  • 3+ years of LabVIEW programming experience. CLD or CLA preferred
  • National Instruments Compact DAQ and PXI Hardware Experience
  • Agile methodology experience
  • Experience with generating and executing test plans
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed

  • Experience in low cost commercial space system ventures
  • Experience with microservice architectures
  • Experience with DDS, Kafka, MQTT or RabbitMQ
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, UDP and Websockets
  • Javascript coding experience
  • Experience with handling and transportation of unique project hardware
  • Experience with vehicle-level integration, test, and launch operations of flight hardware
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
