Technical Writer (Contractor)

 

Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Configuration Management Technical Writer. If you join us in this position, you will be part of a highly skilled team of multi-disciplined engineers helping leadership effectively transition the company from a research and development venture into a full-rate production company. You will be at the heart of decision-making and you will be relied upon for your system knowledge, your ability to research and document complex processes and your attention to detail; both technically and operationally in order to ensure mission safety and success and to safeguard design baseline integrity. This is a full-time contract position lasting a minimum of 180 days at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California. The period of performance may be extended as needed.

 

Your Mission

Responsibilities

  • Read drawings and schematics, access work orders and parts databases and communicate directly with subject matter experts from all organizations to develop, create, review, revise, and release technical documentation following Virgin Orbit style guides, standards, and processes associated with configuration management and the quality management system/AS9100 using Microsoft Office software applications
  • Demonstrate detailed familiarity with the LauncherOne program system and segments, organizational hierarchy, program milestones and schedules, and system engineering/configuration management practices to guide an assist teammates and lead configuration management conformity
  • Work across departments to solve problems in order to meet program objectives/requirements on time
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • BA/BS degree in a STEM or writing oriented discipline or 2+ years of experience developing technical documentation to government and industry standards
  • Highly proficient using MS Office applications and MS Windows-based personal computers
  • Highly proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language at a level capable of communicating complex technical information
  • Proficient in following detailed procedures with attention to accuracy and swiftness
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 10lbs (unassisted)
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Familiarity with Teamcenter, Oracle, Solumina, Tableau, Confluence, and Jira
  • Familiarity with design and development processes including the V-Model
  • Proficiency following detailed procedures with attention to accuracy and swiftness
  • Ability to work well individually and within an integrated product team
  • Ability to swiftly learn and use software tools and applications
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Ambitious, highly motivated, and committed to problem solving and continuous improvement
  • Experience writing technical documentation that includes functional descriptions and procedures
  • Familiarity with the aerospace industry, specifically launch vehicles and small/cube satellites
  • Familiarity with supply chain logistics
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
