Lead Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager- Engine Structures

 

Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Lead Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager- Engine Structures on the Vehicle Engineering team.  If you join us in this position, you will play a significant role in guiding the development of structural/mechanical hardware and systems on the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. 

 

This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • our next-generation Newton engines- from requirements setting, through design, analysis, production, and testing, to integration and flight.  
  • Solve exciting problems on the engineering floor, launch test site and in-office designing/analyzing novel, light-weight hardware.
  • Hardware ownership focused on the primary/secondary structures that mount/house the propulsion components of our engines, as well as limited hardware ownership/design, as bandwidth allows.
  • Develop a variety of vehicle structural elements and configurations in concert with other engineering disciplines.
  • Assist in the development of manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures.
  • Support launch and mission operations.
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place.
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.
  • 7+ years of experience in an aerospace design & manufacturing environment.
  • Strong project management and structures design with demonstrated knowledge of the design, analysis, fabrication, and test of composite and metallic structures, and/or mechanisms.
  • Engineering experience in aerospace, racing, or similar fields, where mass and schedule are critical (experience specific to rocket payloads is not strictly necessary).
  • Experience using NX/Teamcenter or similar applications.
  • Experience working in an environment supporting low cost commercial space system ventures.
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

Skills We Value

 

  • Working experience in Finite Element Analysis using industry tools such as FEMAP, NASTRAN, and ANSYS.
  • Working experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) drafting.
