IT Systems Administrator- Solumina MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems)


Location: Long Beach, CA OR Mojave, CA

Remote: Yes, Hybrid capabilities with expectation of 1-3 days/week on location

Position Summary 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as an IT Systems Administrator for the Solumina MES system. If you join us in this position, you will be responsible, you will be responsible for enterprise manufacturing system specification, configuration, implementation and support. The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex problems across a wide range of technologies for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. 

Your Mission

  • Provide Level 1 end user Support for Solumina MES
  • Create and maintain documentation of best practices and instructions for MES
  • Assist with system upgrades and patch deployments
  • Administer and manage system licenses and user access
  • Resolve normal or recurring MES and ERP integration or transactional issues
  • Escalate issues to other teammates or system vendor when necessary
  • Configure and design user interfaces based on user and/or business needs
  • Facilitate meetings with user groups for User Acceptance Testing
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties assigned

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; One (1) or more years of technical IT support experience in a corporate manufacturing environment; OR the equivalent combination of education and experience including military.
  • Experience with MES disciplines including, but not limited to, process planning and execution, bills of materials, and non-conformance tracking.
  • Detail oriented and able to troubleshoot / trace system problems.
  • Possess good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic SQL knowledge.
  • Experience supporting, assisting, and training Manufacturing users to use a Manufacturing Execution System.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience authoring system functional requirements, technical design documentation, and test plans.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
  • Must be able to work varying hours/shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends, if needed.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time – 8 hours minimum.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and able to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted).
  • Valid CA driver’s license required with clean driving record.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.


Skills We Value

  • Knowledge of Aerospace/Complex discrete manufacturing.
  • Experience supporting complex integrations between multiple systems, e.g., ERP, MES, and PLM.
  • Functional experience with Oracle EBS R12 Manufacturing applications, including: Inventory, Work in Process, Quality, Maintenance, MSCA, Engineering, Bills of Material, Routings, Discrete Manufacturing, Costing.
  • Functional experience with other Manufacturing applications, such as: Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Document Management (DMS), Scheduling, Manufacturing Execution (MES), Manufacturing Operations (MOM), Quality Management (QMS).
  • Experience working with internal customers, external vendors, and business partners to architect and build system solutions for complex manufacturing using the latest technologies to satisfy requirements.
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’.
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team.

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
