Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Propulsion Test Manufacturing Engineer for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This position is responsible for the build and optimization of test and flight hardware from development stages through acceptance testing for flight. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.

 

The selected candidate will be supporting rocket engine and vehicle systems testing as a full-time employee at our test site in Mojave, CA.

Your Mission

  • Ensure a high level of process control is achieved through clear process specifications, work orders, and process design
  • Assist with implementation of process improvements to reduce build cost and achieve quality targets
  • Design and fabricate test site tooling to improve test cadence and site efficiency
  • Coordinate with design and production engineers to implement design and build improvements
  • Author work instructions for build and modification of test and flight articles
  • Work with technicians in the field to prepare test articles prior to testing
  • Ensure that work is performed to plan and document deviations and verifications
  • Act as a member of a test team to operate tests from remote control room
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in aerospace, mechanical or an equivalent relevant field
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience as a manufacturing/process engineer or equivalent
  • Engineering experience with liquid propulsion systems, combustion devices, fluid systems or turbomachinery required
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 30lbs (unassisted)
  • Must be able to handle high desert environments

  • Demonstrated experience transitioning products from prototype manufacturing through volume production including Design for Manufacture and Assembly
  • Hands on experience building and testing propulsion or fluid systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to low and medium volume production programs
  • Experience with Siemens NX/TeamCenter, Oracle and Solumina is a plus
  • Familiar with the use of PFMEAs to reduce risk to the manufacturing process
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Some experience in the outdoors (either professional or recreational)
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
