Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking an Engineering Manager, Data Infrastructure Software to lead the web tools and data software teams for the LauncherOne program and to support scaling up to high production and launch rates. The position reports directly to the Director of Software Engineering. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.

 

This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Manage the teams that develop, tests, and evolves the web tools and data software for the LauncherOne program. Must be able to dive in and help where needed including code development, reviews, architecture decisions etc.
  • Collaborate with teams across the company including Avionics, GN&C, Launch, Propulsion, Structures, Business Development, to elicit requirements and resolve implementation issues.
  • Develop scope and schedule baselines to align with program and company objectives; manage and/or oversee execution of all major deliverables
  • Maintain and report key metrics and forecasts for all software applications under the Mission Support Software umbrella

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with 8+ years relevant experience
  • 2+ years of experience leading a software team through full lifecycle development (i.e. requirements, architecture, design iteration, test, and transition to stable production releases)
  • Experience building and maintaining high performance software teams including forecasting resource requirements, hiring, mentoring etc.
  • Proficient oral and written communications skills including the ability to brief project status to executive leadership.
  • Strong background in software development for web applications and data analytics projects
  • Competent with agile development in a Jira Agile Scrum environment
  • Experience with Docker deployment.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
  • Must be able to work varying hours/shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors
  • Proficient in Javascript and Python languages
  • Experience using web frameworks (Vue, Angular) for development
  • Experience with microservice architectures
  • Knowledge of Event Streaming architectures such as Apache Kafka, MQTT, DDS, etc
  • Expert in using Test Driven Development
  • Familiarity with AWS
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team.
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness.
