Test Technician, Vehicle Engineering Team

 

Position Summary

 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Test Technician on our Vehicle Engineering (formerly Structures) team. If you join us in this position, you will assist in all aspects of working with test stands, hydraulic systems and high pressure plumbing systems. Experience within a testing environment, from structural steel fabrication to hydraulic actuator installation and plumbing of the high pressure and/or cryogenic distribution systems will be required to thrive within the Launcher-One small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.

 

This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in Long Beach, California with extensive (up to 50%) travel to Mojave, CA.

Your Mission

  • Read, understand and use complex test facility systems, drawings, technical manuals, reports, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Use test instrumentation and control components such as pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, flow meters, load cells, relays and solenoid valves.

What you bring

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience using test instrumentation and control components such as pressure transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, flow meters, load cells, relays and solenoid valves.
  • Experience in hydraulic system integration and operation.
  • Experience in high pressure plumbing and cryogenic fluid handling.
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and software in a hands-on testing environments (hydraulic and pneumatic systems).
  • Knowledge or experience in aerospace structural or mechanical systems assembly and testing.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).
  • Must be able to work varying hours/shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends, if needed.
  • Must be able to travel to Mojave, CA up to 50% of time.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

Physical Requirements

  • Position may require extended work hours and weekend work.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. unassisted, lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position.
  • Ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment with prolonged mental concentration and acute attention to detail.
  • General physical fitness is required for some work areas, tight quarters and physical dexterity is required.
  • Occasionally exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, etc. and work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces.

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
