Sr. Facilities Manager


Position Summary 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Sr. Facilities Manager to lead our growing facility operations.  In this role, the candidate will develop comprehensive policies and practices to maintain the facility's condition, the performance of equipment and tools, and compliance of workstream processes to the safety regulations and protocols of the company. The Sr. Facilities Manager will have exceptional knowledge in the complexities of maintaining a large production facility, manage the Electrical, Equipment and general facilities trades and related contractors, along with the complexities of reporting and prioritizing work scope. Accomplish company objectives by establishing action plans, timetables, and risk mitigation outcome measurements, and ability to make mid-course corrections.


The Sr. Facilities Manager will support the growth of our aggressive rate and ramp up goals to allow the Launcher One program to be the global choice.  The company is experiencing, and increased footprint expansion and this role will lead and support security infrastructure improvements and development, and the identification, procurement and installation of capital equipment. This role will be a highly visible, cross-functional position, and reporting to the Sr. Director of Supply Chain   This role will also be responsible for the leadership and supervision of  the Facilities team and management of day to day activties. This is a Full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California launch test and operations site in beautiful Mojave, California.

Your Mission


  • Lead VO factory expansion infrastructure growth plan and installation of appropriate equipment
  • Gather and integrate requirements for data concerning facility and equipment specifications, company, or government restrictions, and required schedules, then integrate into a project master plan.
  • Build and implement comprehensive strategies to support manufacturing and supporting functions growth
  • Coordinate closely with the Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, Information Technology, and Enterprise Application Systems teams on project inputs, progress, and risks, ensuring clarity of task objectives and ownership
  • Prepare Scopes of Work and supporting documents to source, approved designs, construction, and equipment to include related services
  • Forecast and report on project status, including key project metrics for Risk, Cost, and schedule
  • Assist in reviewing proposals, estimated costs, including design, equipment, installation, construction, and other related costs
  • Excellent understanding of investigation and surveillance reporting
  • Manage financial budgets by controlling and reducing costs through efficient and optimal use of department assets and spend
  • Implementing department standards and ensures quality control is met for the development and maintenance of all departmental operational and administrative guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Buildout requirements, processes, and procedures specialty logistics

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Security, and/or Engineering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities engineering, and/or construction management
  • Leadership experience as an interdisciplinary project or product manager
  • Experience with management of multidisciplinary, construction, and commissioning of equipment
  • Project management experience that includes leading cross-functional teams, building integrated schedules, creating, and managing to budgets.
  • Creative problem solver, ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, excellent people, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience training teams on security protocols and requirements
  • Willing to travel
  • Ability to more than average workdays, and some weekends when required
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Valid CA driver’s license required with clean driving record.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space.
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment.
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail.

  • Master’s degree in either an engineering, or business field of study
  • Experience interfacing with local and state government agencies for security, building, and equipment installation projects
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’.

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
