Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

 

Position Summary 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking an experienced Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist professional who will play a key role in the implementation, operation and maintenance of environmental and safety programs. This role is for a knowledgeable hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This role requires someone who can work in a high pace environment. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of site specific safety policies by Cal/OSHA standards
    • Confined space entry program
    • Fall Protection program
    • Lock-out/ tag-out program
    • Electrical safety program
    • Emergency Response Plan
    • Fire Safety program
    • Fire Prevention Plan
    • Area Safety Audits
    • Safety Committee
  • Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste program, including:
    • Proper handling, labeling and storage, and conducting weekly inspections of all waste areas, including satellite accumulation areas throughout the Factory
    • Maintaining hazardous waste logs (90 & 180 Day)
    • Assist Lead EHS Specialist and Senior EHS Engineer as needed with waste characterization and profiling
  • Oil, hazardous material and hazardous waste spill prevention, response and reporting
  • Maintain consistent communication with Operations, Facilities, EHS Manager and EHS Engineer about site projects that may impact EHS related plans and permits
  • Order and maintain adequate safety supplies: PPE, fall protection, LOTO, arc flash, welding safety, monitoring equipment, testing supplies
  • Assist in hazardous operations as required for article testing and development
  • Order and maintain adequate spill supplies: spill pads, empty drums, secondary containment, and other equipment necessary to maintain safe handling and correct disposal of hazardous waste
  • Performs environmental compliance and due diligence audits, including:
    • Monthly Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures (SPCC)/Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act (APSA) inspection
    • Assist EHS Engineer with ensuring compliance with various air permit operating conditions, as required by SCAQMD
  • Assist with the site Industrial Hygiene program
    • Site industrial hygiene program
    • Respiratory Protection Program
    • Understands and/or worked on cryogenic fluid systems
    • Understands and/or worked with pyrophoric materials
  • Conducts and/or coordinates employee safety and environmental training programs and emergency response training drills
  • Investigate industrial accidents and injuries to determine causes and preventive measures
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment, including fire extinguishers and emergency lights, in order to identify and correct potential hazards
  • Collaborates with supervisors and leads to complete job hazard analysis (JHA) and PPE assessments
  • Monitor employee exposure to job and chemical hazards
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees’ exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards
  • Report or review findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections and environmental testing
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

  • Perform other duties assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • 5+ years of experience in Environmental, Health and Safety disciplines required; Industrial Hygiene/Hazardous Waste Management
  • HAZWOPER training
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification or previous EMT experience
  • Extensive knowledge in environmental hazards, safety disciplines with experience in safety, ergonomics, environmental compliance and industrial hygiene
  • Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying and documenting federal, state and local safety, transportation, and environmental regulations
  • Knowledge of Cal OSHA, EPA, DOT and local and state regulations
  • Experience using Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to pass a respirator medical evaluation
  • Proficiency in completing Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs)
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Ability to work overtime when necessary
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted)
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Experience with emergency response crews in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water
  • Experience assisting with workers compensation investigations
  • Ability to multi-task, to adapt to shifting priorities and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
