Position Summary 

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Sr. Propulsion Test Technician. If you join us in this position, you will assist in preparing LauncherOne for propulsion operations as part of the LauncherOne small satellite launch program.  This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills.

 

This is a Full-time position at our launch test and operations site in beautiful Mojave, California.

Your Mission

  • Fabricate, modify and or repair engine components and equipment as required
  • Work with and provide input to the development and manufacturing engineers to improve part manufacturability
  • Use of hand tools for the buildup and test of propulsion engines
  • Use of appropriate PPE when working around parts on the shop floor
  • Support the implementation of the ERP system on the shop floor and recommend changes as required
  • Recommend and implement continuous improvement activities in production methods, equipment performance and team effectiveness.
  • Ability to maintain certifications and licenses as required
  • Ability to train and lead team members, be willing to lead by example and jump in to help when required
  • Maintain high standards of safety, quality and output consistent with the requirements of being a Virgin Orbit team member

What you bring

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5 years of experience in  propulsion systems assembly, testing and maintenance
  • A valid class A noncommercial driver’s license
  • Clean driving record
  • Demonstrated experience in new product introductions within aerospace, aviation or automotive
  • Knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing
  • Valid CA driver's license required with a clean driving record
  • Must be able to operate company vehicle and/or equipment
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability and desire to perform in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit.

Physical Requirements

  • Position may require extended work hours and weekend work.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. unassisted, lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position.
  • Ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment with prolonged mental concentration and acute attention to detail.
  • General physical fitness is required for some work areas, tight quarters and physical dexterity is required.
  • Occasionally exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain, etc. and work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces.

 

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
