    Position Summary

    Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, Avionics to join the LauncherOne rocket team. This role will require a background in Aerospace manufacturing and avionics build, test, and integration. This will be a hands-on person with great attention to detail and will be located at Virgin Orbit’s facility in Long Beach, California.

    Your Mission

    • Provide leadership and technical direction to the avionics manufacturing engineering team.
    • Ensure a high level of process control is achieved through clear process specifications, work orders, and process design.
    • Aggressively drive and implement process improvements to reduce assembly hours, build cost, and achieve quality targets.
    • Own the facility layout for avionics production processes, ensuring detailed planning is done to support cost and rate targets.
    • Responsible for identifying the capital projects required to support company objectives and for providing justification, budget oversight, and implementation.
    • Develop and maintain capacity plans for processes and equipment.
    • In coordination with management, set goals and objectives for team members for the achievement of operational results. Implement methods to monitor progress and identify risks or roadblocks preventing success. 
    • Coach and support professional development of team members.
    • Evaluate alternative manufacturing and assembly processes to improve quality and cost.

    What you bring

    • Bachelor of Science Engineering degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or equivalent
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment with a BS degree, or 5 years with a MS degree.   
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a manufacturing/process engineer or equivalent.
    • Direct engineering experience with electrical harness and avionics hardware build, test, and integration.    
    • Leadership experience as a project leader or with direct reports.
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
    • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
    • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
    • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

    • Master of Science Engineering degree in aerospace, mechanical or equivalent
    • Demonstrated experience transitioning products from prototype manufacturing through volume production including Design for Manufacture and Assembly
    • Considerable knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to low and medium volume production programs
    • Experience with Siemens NX / TeamCenter and Oracle is a plus
    • Familiar with the use of PFMEAs to reduce risk to the manufacturing process.
    • Creative problem solver, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
    • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
    • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
    • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

     

    ITAR Requirements

    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
