    Position Summary

    Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Principal Quality Engineer supporting flight and launch operations. If you join us in this position, you will help develop, oversee and continually improve a robust quality system for major systems testing, ground support equipment and aircraft operations for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position in beautiful Long Beach California.

    Your Mission

    • Develop, provide oversight of, and continually improve quality processes across all relevant operations
    • Ensure VO meets all FAA requirements, and support all FAA interfaces
    • Review, improve, drive the creation of, and build quality into all needed specifications and procedures involved in flight and launch operations
    • Interface with manufacturing, inspection, engineering, and supply chain to ensure that requirements are met and efficient processes are in place
    • Report in regularly to Quality leadership, and work at least 2 days a month at our headquarters in Long Beach
    • Travel to all launch sites, both domestic and international, as required
    • Implement FOD prevention measures
    • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain VO’s Quality Management System
    • Drive process improvement projects in a team-based environment
    • Develop and maintain helpful process metrics
    • Drive corrective actions on product and process quality issues
    • Manage the non-conformance landscape, escalate issues as appropriate, and evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions
    • Perform regular Quality process audits
    • Manage configuration and material traceability of all flight hardware
    • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

    What you bring

    If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

    • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field plus at least 10 years of relevant experience
    • At least 3 years of experience working with FAA regulations
    • In-depth understanding of the manufacturing methods, materials, testing, qualification and quality issues involved in aerospace production
    • Experience working in commercial aircraft operations
    • Demonstrated innovation in process improvements, knocking down barriers, and tackling challenging problems
    • Attention to detail and follow through
    • Knowledge of AS9100 or other relevant quality standards
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
    • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
    • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
    • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

    • At least 7 years of experience working in an aerospace manufacturing environment
    • At least 5 years of experience in a Quality Assurance role
    • Experience working with commercial airplanes, rockets, and associated ground support equipment
    • Basic understanding of a variety of NDT methods
    • Experience working with ERP and MES systems
    • Creative problem solver; able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
    • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
    • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’


    ITAR Requirements
    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
