    Position Summary

    Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Launch Electronics Technician.  In this role you will literally build our rocket and launch systems. You will work hands-on with space hardware, translating designs into reality, and your skill and attention to detail will apply directly to on-orbit mission success. Our team is small and flexible, your ability to work autonomously and be creative will be tested! This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

    Your Mission

    • Provide technician support which involves building, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting equipment such as data acquisition systems, breakout boxes, instrumentation, industrial controls, DC power distribution, and RF test racks.
    • Maintain, trouble shoot, and repair equipment and instrumentation as needed.
    • Operate the GSE during checkout and ground fueling operations of LauncherOne.
    • Integrate and test flight hardware.
    • Collaborate with design engineers to develop and document GSE activities.
    • Obtain and maintain licenses, operator permits or certifications as required.
    • Follow all necessary regulations and appropriate Virgin Orbit procedures including quality policies, safety policies, OSHA, EPA, NIOSH, NFPA, ASME, NEC, etc.
    • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

    • Performs other duties as assigned

    What you bring

    If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

    • 2 – 5 years of experience as an electronics technician in aerospace or equivalent high-reliability field
    • Experience building and routing harnesses and connectors for indoor and outdoor applications
    • Ability to read schematics, harness wiring diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical drawings, circuit layouts, and parts lists
    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
    • Applicants must pass a soldering and crimping test
    • Intimate experience with a wide range of hand tools for crimping, stripping, soldering, and assembling electronics
    • Travel on short notice to local area test sites over extended periods of time
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
    • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
    • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
    • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
    • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
    • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
    • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

    … and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

    • Certification to J-STD-001 space and/or NASA.STD.8739.4
    • Experience on Aircraft, Spacecraft, and/or Aerospace ground and test equipment
    • Familiarity with printed circuit boards, repairing and assembling surface mount components
    • Some college education is desired, preferably technical or engineering based
    • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
    • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

    ITAR Requirements

    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
