    Position Summary

    Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Senior Python Software Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will assist in building out an automated testing suite for our flight software for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

    Your Mission

    • Work under the direction of the Team Lead to understand and implement the functional aspects of the testing suite
    • Implement the functionality of the testing suite using Python 2.7, and in a way that is compatible with Python 3.x in the future
    • Perform code reviews for other team members upholding the highest standards in software development
    • Produce professional and traceable documentation, including software designs, and acceptance verification plan(s) for the test system
    • Work within an agile development process
    • Adhere to the engineering processes and best practices of VO
    • Enhance and grow the software development best practices of VO
    • Work within the software infrastructure for automated production test and simulated mission testing
    • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
    • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    What you bring

    If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

    • Python 2.7 development, at least 5 years
    • Python 3.x development, at least 2 years
    • Experience with Ubuntu 14.04, or similar, as a development environment
    • Experience with “agile” development and “test driven development” processes
    • Software design skills appropriate for a “senior” level developer
    • Experience with the following process tools: git, Jira, Confluence
    • Strong passion for quality and commitment to applying industry best practices
    • Strong documentation capabilities, including traceability principles
    • Understanding of and willingness to work on mission and safety critical software systems
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
    • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to excellence
    • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
    • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
    • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed

    • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
    • Experience with embedded systems development
    • Experience with real time systems
    • C++, including 11,14,17
    • CMake, Bash and general scripting languages
    • Numpy, scipy and Matlab
    • Systems debugging, including remote processes
    • Understanding and use of software design patterns
    • Enjoy working as a member of a cooperative team
    • Commitment to personal and professional growth and a drive to learn new things


    ITAR Requirements
    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
