    Position Summary

    Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Avionics Hardware Manager. The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of electrical systems, PCBA, component, harnessing, and FPGA development.  If you join us in this position, you will be working closely with other teams, both inside and outside of avionics for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

    Your Mission

    • Manage and mentor the Avionics Hardware team, including electrical engineering, FPGA, and mechanical development.
    • Manage the avionics overall schedule for hardware deliveries (development as well as first few flights) to internal and external team.
    • Provide engineering expertise in the area of design, development and test of avionics hardware that will support the functions of our launch vehicles.
    • Provide engineering expertise to support supply chain, quality, and inventory team to coordinate avionics hardware deliveries.
    • Own the avionics development processes, including existing ones as wells as creating new ones as necessary.
    • Verify teams are following and designing to the requirements established for the system, or modifying them to represent new design directions.
    • Ensure changes to the system and requirements are communicated within and outside the team.
    • Work closely with other teams, including software, test, propulsion, structures, production and others.

    What you bring

    If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

    • Bachelor of Science or Masters of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
    • Experience managing an engineering team
    • 5+ years of experience in hands-on electronics development and 2+ years of experience in a technical management position.
    • Background designing and implementing complex systems, such as automotive, aerospace, large-scale UAVs.
    • Familiarity with broad array of avionics design, including electrical circuits, harnessing, FPGA, vehicle integration, test, etc.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
    • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
    • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
    • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
    • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
    • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 15lbs (unassisted)
    • Valid CA driver’s license required with clean driving record

    • Experience programming or scripting languages (C/ C++, Matlab, Python)
    • Experience in designing, integrating, and/or testing launch vehicles
    • Background for designing electronics for high reliability and / or harsh environments
    • Ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
    • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

     

     

    ITAR Requirements
    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
