    Position Summary

    Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Manager, Propulsion 1st Stage. If you join us in this position, you will assist with a transition to Production of both the Propellant & Pressurant Management System (PPMS) and NewtonThree Engine for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program, as well as guide continued development of propulsion systems. This role will be reporting to the Director of Propulsion and is a hands-on position with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.


    Your Mission


    • Responsibilities to create, understand, or review operations procedures, systems schematics, manufacturing plans and assembly build books
    • Create development plans to get to qualification and operation with optimum amount of hardware and test articles
    • Lead team in Test Readiness Reviews and Data Reviews
    • Perform system-level propulsion trade studies
    • Adapt to and guide team through shifting priorities in fast-paced development program
    • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
    • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    • B.S. Engineering or Physics required
    • 5 years launch-vehicle related experience
    • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment

    • Up to 30% travel will be required to our Test and Launch sites located in Mojave, CA 
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
    • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
    • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted

    • Master of Science degree in engineering, preferred
    • Demonstrated deep understanding and management of complex space system experience
    • Hazardous propulsion testing experience (required) and launch operations experience, preferred
    • Management of high-performance engineering teams
    • Exposure and some experience with:
      • Theoretical and practical rocket performance predictions
      • Parallel flow circuit balancing and optimization with real fluid properties
      • Exposure to Turbopumps, Combustion Devices, Piping, and Valving
      • Modern fabrication and assembly techniques
      • Hazardous Test Planning & Execution
      • Low/High speed data collection, analysis, and interpretation
      • Design Review preparation, execution, and evaluation
    • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
    • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

    ITAR Requirements

    To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
