Position Summary

Virgin Orbit is seeking a Material Coordinator-2nd Shift to execute inventory, shipping and receiving activities within the LauncherOne program at the new Long Beach manufacturing facility. The Material Coordinator is a valuable member within materials supporting and communicating with management and our internal customer. The candidate will have experience executing process, leading and training team members on policy. Possess extensive experience in materials movement from the stockroom to production distribution and receiving and moving parts at the shipping dock. This shall include, but not limited to inventory control and audits, issue, distribution, basic kick n’ count receiving inspection, and receipts. The candidate will assist in the implementation of the ERP and OMSC systems. Train team and perform inventory transactions, physical inventory cycle counts, perform inventory distribution, and receive. 


The Material Coordinator-2nd Shift will effectively lead material processes, inventory control, and problem solve for all materials including raw material, goods, consumables, hazardous materials and other inventory items necessary for the LauncherOne program. Ideal candidates will have a work history that demonstrates the ability to operate successfully in a fast paced manufacturing environment that requires exceptional attention to detail. Experience with new product introductions, lean manufacturing, cost and quality optimization along with material flow on the production floor is highly desired.

Your Mission

  • Effectively communicate with management on projects and challenges.
  • Advocate material processes and changes in goods movement for inventory control.
  • Perform accurate transactions for all goods movement in the ERP system and outside the system per VO polices.
  • Maintain accurate inventory, perform cycle counting, and physical inventory of stock.
  • Build and perform kitting functions.
  • Support and communicate inbound and outbound materials as required for shipping, receiving, work orders, receipts and returns. Verify all incoming/outgoing documentation and applicable certifications are correct. 
  • Inspect inbound hazardous materials to ensure required hazmat or MSDS documentation is correct at the time of receipt for all materials entering the facility. Adhere to any EHS administrative processes and all special storage requirements.
  • Effectively communicate with management on projects and challenges.
  • Actively care for and maintain capital equipment for the storage and movement of material.
  • Maintain and update the Material Department Quality Management System.
  • Train and support new material team members on material distribution, receiving kick n’ count, and logistics.

What you bring

  • High school diploma and equivalent experience in aerospace, aviation or automotive. 
  • Prior experience in material handling and logistics is a must to be successful in this role.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a material handling and logistics role required.
  • Experience in communicating with management and team, materials handling procedures and work instructions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to material flow and inventory management.
  • Demonstrated experience in new product introductions within aerospace, aviation or automotive.
  • History operating equipment such as forklifts.
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement

  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in aerospace, aviation or automotive. 
  • Experienced with MS Office and ERP systems.
  • Creative problem solver, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in both R&D and production rate environments.
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs; ability to operate forklift truck and pallet jack.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
