This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Author work instructions to build subassemblies, integrated assemblies, and checkout procedures, while considering efficiency, manufacturability, and safety.
  • Interface with Structures, Propulsion, and Avionics design teams to incorporate DFM into assemblies in a timely manner.
  • Provide technical direction to both design teams (eBOM configuration, DFM, etc.) and production teams (priorities, assembly techniques, etc.) as necessary to reach company goals.
  • Act as vehicle test conductors at subsystem and vehicle levels to ensure design and build integrity.
  • Explore ways to improve processes and products for launch vehicles and provide feedback as needed.
  • Assist with program level budgeting, scheduling, and manpower estimates.
  • Identify the tooling and support equipment needed to support integration (mechanical, electrical, electronic, fluids, etc.) activities. Work closely with the Tooling team to ensure tools are designed and procured appropriately.
  • Assist with transitioning the Manufacturing Integration team from a small scale development support team to a high rate production resource.
  • Project manage the build of individual rockets ensuring they’re built on time, long lead parts are procured on-time, and manage corrective actions from working nonconformances. Find root cause and prevent these problems on future builds.
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed

… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. This role is highly interdisciplinary and requires sharp people skills.
  • Knowledge of two or more of the following: mechanical processes (precision drilling, heat treating, anodizing, machining, and fastening), composite material processes (trim, bonding and repair), fluid systems (cryogenic, RP-1, gaseous Helium and Nitrogen, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams, leak checks), avionics systems (boxes, harness installs, connector mating), in addition to testing processes for each disipline.
  • Considerable knowledge in lean manufacturing and its application to low mix-medium-volume production.
  • Experience working in both development and production environments.
  • Experience with TeamCenter and Siemens NX
  • Experience with pressurized systems, procedures, and best practices is a plus.
