Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Manufacturing Engineer, Avionics for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.


Your Mission

  • Provide manufacturing engineering support to design and production for wire harnesses and avionics hardware assembly and test
  • Write work instructions for the build, test and integration process

  • Responsible for the manufacturing and assembly process on the production shop floor

  • Create the requirements for manufacturing specification including ESD, FOD, in-process test and error-proofing, conformal coatings, soldering and repair processes

  • Provide technical expertise into the design of the components and assemblies to  maximize quality level, minimize cost, and achieve rate targets

  • Responsible for the production layout of the process in the facility, continually analysing and planning workflow, capacity and space requirements

  • Review engineering drawings for released components, working closely with the design and engineering teams for avionics and integration
  • Responsible to develop error-proofing techniques to minimize risk and assure build quality

  • Provide support to root cause manufacturing issues in development and production

  • Provide the specification, evaluation and implementation of new capital equipment for the production process and material handling

  • Support the development and production of the avionics hardware

  • Serve as the link between engineering, production, quality and supply chain

  • Responsible for continuous improvement activities associated with avionics hardware

  • Support the supply chain team with supplier evaluations and risk assessments

  • Evaluate alternative manufacturing and assembly processes to improve quality and cost


What you bring

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, aerospace, mechanical, electrical or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in the manufacturing or design of avionics hardware or similar product
  • Experience in aerospace, aviation, automotive, medical or consumer goods
  • Demonstrated experience in DFx techniques to support reduced cost and lean manufacturing

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years of experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in new product introductions within aerospace or aviation
  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to low and medium volume production programs
  • Experience with training technicians and others in the correct build techniques
  • Familiar with rocket/aircraft avionics designs and complex sub-assemblies
  • Familiar with the use of PFMEAs to reduce risk to the manufacturing process
  • Creative problem solver, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to create capacity plans to support departmental budgeting for capital equipment
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work in both R&D and production rate environments
  • Experiene with TeamCenter, Siemens NX and Oracle is a prefered

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
