Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Quality Engineer, Contractor/Consultant. If you join us in this position, you would closely support the existing Quality Engineering team in approving engineering drawings and manufacturing process plans. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a contract position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Review and approve engineering drawings, ensuring they meet VO quality requirements and specifications.
  • Review and approve manufacturing process plans in the VO Manufacturing Execution System.
  • Interface with manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain to ensure that requirements are met and correctly documented
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain VO’s Quality Management System
  • Manage configuration of assemblies as they are integrated on the shop floor
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency reading engineering drawings.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T and dimensional measurement techniques
  • Knowledgeable regarding metallic hardware fabrication processes
  • In-depth understanding of the manufacturing methods, materials, testing, qualification and quality issues involved in aerospace production
  • Attention to detail and follow through
  • Knowledge of AS9100 or other relevant quality standards
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Ability to navigate Model-Based Definition and/or Product and Manufacturing Information

… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • At least 3 years of experience in a Quality Assurance or Manufacturing Engineering role
  • Experience with TeamCenter, Siemens NX and Oracle
  • Familiarity with welding per AWS D17.1
  • Familiarity with common NDT methods, including dye penetrant and x-ray
  • Knowledge of integration of mechanical subassemblies, propulsion and avionics systems
  • Creative problem solver; able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
