You must be a creative thinker, an effective writer and negotiator, and a passionate advocate for our mission.  You will work with smart, dedicated professionals who are building a world-changing business and will value your legal guidance and input.   This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Identify and manage regulatory issues related to Virgin Orbit’s launch vehicle development and test and commercial flight program
  • Work on a wide range of regulatory matters, including the requirements of 14 CFR 431 for Launch and Reentry of Reusable Launch Vehicle, launch site operator requirements under 14 CFR 420, regulations governing site operations for engine hot-fire testing, and other relevant licensing requirements such as obtaining a remote sensing license from NOAA and applicable FCC license requirements for radio frequencies to obtain telemetry data from launch vehicles
  • Work with our team to draft necessary applications and manage the application review process with the relevant government agencies
  • Deal with diverse constituencies and external parties (board members, investors, other stakeholders, regulators, external counsel, politicians, customers & clients, and other business leaders)
  • Supervise outside counsel as necessary
  • Assist with developing Virgin Orbit’s strategy with respect to regulatory matters
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • 4-6 years of relevant experience in a high-caliber law firm or comparable corporate environment
  • Relevant industry experience with an aerospace and defense company – not necessary but it would be an added bonus
  • Experience with drafting relevant applications and responding to regulator inquiries
  • Demonstrated ability with regulatory matters to (i) identify and raise salient issues, (ii) draft language and propose various options that take into account relevant strategic or business goals, and (iii) communicate issues, risks and solutions clearly and concisely to lawyers and non-lawyers alike
  • An understanding of (or a willingness to learn) the technical, market and customer objectives of our business, in order to provide business-oriented legal advice
  • Experience dealing with diverse constituencies and external parties (customers, board members, investors, senior management, regulators and external counsel)
  • Strong social, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work well independently and as part of a team with business partners
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and assignments simultaneously, without significant direct supervision from a senior attorney, and still meet high quality and timeliness standards
  • Sound judgment and a commitment to ethical conduct
  • JD degree, with strong academic credentials
  • Current membership in the State Bar of California
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement

  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
