Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Launch Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will assist in the development, implementation and operations of launch systems at our Mojave, Florida, and equatorial launch sites for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. Launch Systems include Ground Support Equipment (GSE) consisting of Liquid Oxygen, Kerosene, Helium, and Nitrogen systems with associated command and control, Rocket transport, payload fairing mate and mating of the Rocket to the carrier aircraft. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Design, build, maintain and operate Ground Support Equipment for LOX, RP-1, Helium, and GN2
  • Support shipment of completed rocket from Long Beach to Mojave, Florida, and equatorial sites
  • Payload fairing mate to rocket
  • Complete rocket mate to 747
  • Lead or contribute to anomaly resolutions as needed
  • Assist in development and integration of launch processes and procedures
  • Launch and mission operations support
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Passion for space explorations and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering (or related discipline) with a minimum of 2+ years of experience
  • Demonstrate success in technically focused projects involving hardware design, build and test of support equipment (mechanical, electrical, electronic, and/or fluids)
  • Experience with process and instrumentation diagrams
  • Experience with generating and executing test plans
  • Cryogenic experience
  • High pressure gas experience
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to travel to test and launch sites in Mojave, Florida, and equatorial sites
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

  • Experience in low cost commercial space system ventures
  • Experience with handling and transportation of unique project hardware
  • Experience with vehicle-level integration, test, and launch operations of flight hardware
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Work, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong team player
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one-person team’


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
