Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a Launch Engineer to design, analyse, and implement launch systems for an air-launched rocket. Launch Engineers will also have the opportunity to operate launch systems from the launch control center for all missions worldwide. Launch systems include ground support equipment (GSE) consisting of liquid oxygen (LOX), kerosene (RP-1), helium, and nitrogen systems with their associated command and control. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Create GSE for remote operation of LOX, RP-1, helium, and nitrogen systems
  • Plan and execute development tests to demonstrate system performance
  • Produce procedures, launch commit criteria, warnings, and other tools to operate ground and flight systems during fueling operations
  • Be on console in the launch control center on test and launch days
  • Review test/flight data and compare to predictions
  • Contribute to anomaly resolutions as needed

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or related STEM major
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in fluid systems
  • Worked directly with cryogenic or high pressure fluid systems
  • Demonstrated ability to improve process and efficiency of existing fluid systems
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)
  • Willing to travel occasionally (<10% of time)


… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • Experience with liquid vehicle fueling systems
  • Experience in system integration, test, and operation of flight hardware
  • Experience designing, building, and testing fluid systems per ASME B31.3
  • Experience serving in critical technical capacity for engineering project
  • Experience developing tools to work safely and efficiently in a time-sensitive operation

  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
