Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Corporate Controller. If you join us in this position, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will provide Accounting support for both the finance team and a broad range of teammate “customers” of the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person who will managie the monthly accounting close process which includes the VO corporate consolidation and select financial reporting, as well to work closely with our external auditors and tax consultants on a wide range of corporate initiatives and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Supervise all activities of the accounting group
  • Manage and conduct the monthly close process
  • Produce monthly financial statements in accordance with US GAAP and IFRS
  • Manage the Virgin Orbit consolidation
  • Ensure the effectiveness of internal controls
  • File all periodic governmental filings (property tax, sales & use tax, etc.)
  • Direct / Control all cash management functions
  • Manage accounting policies, procedures, processes and business systems to ensure high quality and efficient accounting and reporting
  • Assist with the  corporate tax reporting requirement with our external tax advisors
  • Review journal entries complete with necessary supporting documentation and schedules.
  • Review account reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis
  • Provide account analysis where necessary to appropriately determine accruals or other estimates to be recorded in the general ledger
  • Maintain multiple financial schedules to ensure monthly updates are made and properly recorded in the financial statements
  • Perform technical accounting research to determine appropriate treatment for a variety of transactions under US GAAP and IFRS
  • Prepare and review supporting schedules for use in financial statements and/or footnote disclosures (US GAAP and IFRS).
  • Assist in providing critical financial information to other teammates within and outside of Finance
  • Assist with the annual financial statement audit and working with our external auditors on various accounting issues as needed
  • Support financial planning and analysis on bid & proposal efforts and on new programs and projects.
  • Perform data extractions & prepare reports to support financial statements.
  • Prepare periodic regulatory filings and other regulatory requirements.
  • Play a key role in general process improvements and process documentation for all facets of the accounting cycle as well as the continued development and documentation of our accounting policies and procedures.
  • Cultivate internal relations at all levels by providing support and a high level of customer service.
  • Perform various projects such as research, special projects & analysis as needed.
  • Ad hoc projects as directed
  • Support FP&A team during the monthly reporting and forecast processes. (e.g., participate in monthly review meetings, awareness and communication of changes in accounting policies or estimates, etc.)
  • Hire, train and develop accounting team member


What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of thes

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in overall accounting, with at least 3-5 years of experience at a Big Four public accounting firm
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, MBA preferred; CPA required
  • At least 5 years of managing an accounting team
  • Advanced knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, tax planning, banking, cash management, and cost control principles
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of accounting rules to properly interpret and determine applicable accounting treatment.
  • Strong technical accounting skills including the ability to prepare accurate and timely financial reports
  • SEC reporting
  • Experience with Sarbanes Oxley implementation
  • Demonstrated experience with accounting systems and practices. Oracle EBS experience a plus
  • Proven ability to present and explain financial data and analysis to both finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Strong administration/time management skills essential
  • Team player with a positive work attitude
  • Advanced intermediate level proficiency in all MS Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Must be inquisitive and able to solve problems creatively.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills required
  • Travel requirement: minimal
  • Creative individual with a keen eye for detail and precision
  • Effective in researching and recommending policies and procedures to all levels of management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a project from conception to completion
  • Proactive and customer-service oriented individual, with a desire to solve problems and deliver timely and effective solutions

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment a plus
  • Flexible attitude, with the uncanny ability to work well under pressure and with ‘on the spot’ priority situations in a quick and effective manner

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
