Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Quality Engineer for Structures. If you join us in this position, you will provide quality oversight and support for the design and manufacture of all major structural hardware for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission


  • Provide quality oversight and support for fabrication and assembly of structural components and assemblies for LauncherOne
  • Review and improve the design and manufacturing processes of structural hardware
  • Interface with manufacturing, inspection, engineering, and supply chain to ensure that requirements are met and efficient processes are in place
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain VO’s Quality Management System
  • Drive process improvement projects in a team-based environment
  • Help define and develop process specifications
  • Develop and maintain required process metrics
  • Drive corrective actions on product and process quality issues
  • Manage the non-conformance landscape, escalate issues as appropriate, and evaluate effectiveness of corrective actions
  • Perform regular Quality process audits
  • Manage configuration and material traceability of hardware on the shop floor

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • At least 3 years of experience working in an aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Experience working with solid laminate and sandwich composite structures
  • Knowledgeable regarding composite structure manufacturing processes including wet layup, trimming, drilling, structural bonding and assembly processes
  • In-depth understanding of the manufacturing methods, materials, testing, qualification and quality issues involved in composite production
  • Attention to detail and follow through
  • Knowledge of AS9100 or other relevant quality standards
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • At least 3 years of experience in a Quality Assurance role
  • Knowledge of filament winding techniques
  • Basic understanding of rework/repair processes for cured laminate structures
  • Experience with bonding adhesives
  • Basic understanding of a variety of NDT methods
  • Experience working with ERP and MES systems (TeamCenter, Siemens NX, Solumina, Oracle)
  • Demonstrated innovation in process improvements, knocking down barriers, and tackling challenging problems
  • Creative problem solver; able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
