Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Test Site Design Engineer for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program.  If you join us in this position, you will be a part of the test side electrical and mechanical ground support equipment (EGSE and MGSE) operations teams. These teams support the development of LauncherOne engines and components, ground support equipment, and test fixtures for the production of LauncherOne launch vehicles. The ideal candidate will be experienced in the design, development, and operation of test hardware facilities fluid systems and/or instrumentation and data acquisition systems. This is an opportunity to be part of the team creating a world class test site for the world’s newest launch system. Successful candidates will have experience working in fast paced integrated product teams with development engineering, supply chain, quality and production. Experience in the development of launch or test site hardware and equipment will be essential to this role.  This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Mojave, California.

Your Mission

  • Design and manage the build of tooling, fixtures, and ground support equipment to support all rocket testing activity
  • Support design and flow of activity on the test site
  • Work with internal and external teams to ensure hardware gets built and implemented on time and meets build requirements
  • Actively support the use and analysis of ergonomics to ensure human factors are taken into consideration
  • Collaborate with engineering and technicians to ensure tooling does not damage parts
  • Provide support to design, build, or test issues in development and production

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or relevant field
  • 4 years of experience as a designer within aerospace, aviation or automotive industries.
  • Ability to create using solid modelling CAD systems such as NX, Solidworks or similar
  • Creative problem solver, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience setting up new production or test facilities.
  • Ability to work in both R&D and production rate environments

  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills

  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’



ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
