Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Structures. This role will require a background in manufacturing and composite part development. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission


  • Provide leadership and technical direction to the integration manufacturing engineering team
  • Influence other engineering functions, production teams, and external suppliers to drive achievement of objectives, establishing strong working links with these teams

  • Ensure a high level of process control is achieved through clear process specifications, work orders, and process design
  • Aggressively drive and implement process improvements to reduce cost and achieve quality and rate targets
  • Own the facility layout for production processes, ensuring detailed planning is done to support cost and rate targets
  • Responsible for identifying the capital projects required to support company objectives and for providing justification, budget oversight, and implementation
  • Develop and maintain capacity plans for processes and equipment
  • Set goals and objectives for team members for the achievement of operational results. Implement methods to monitor progress and identify risks or roadblocks preventing success
  • Coach and support professional development of team members
  • Evaluate alternative manufacturing and assembly processes to improve quality and cost
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…


  • Bachelor of Science Engineering degree in aerospace, mechanical or equivalent

  • Minimum of 9 years of experience in a manufacturing environment with a BS degree, or 7 years with a MS degree

  • Minimum of 2 years in a leadership role, with either technical leadership responsibilities or direct supervisory responsibility for a team

  • Manufacturing engineering experience with complex assemblies that require integration of electrical and/or fluid systems
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness

  • Master of Science Engineering degree in aerospace, mechanical or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience transitioning products from prototype manufacturing through volume production including Design for Manufacture and Assembly

  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to low and medium volume production programs

  • Experience with Siemens NX / TeamCenter and Oracle is a plus

  • Familiar with the use of PFMEAs to reduce risk to the manufacturing process

  • Creative problem solver, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills

  • Design and analysis (Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience

  • Experience performing system level testing for complex integrated assemblies

  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
