Position Summary


Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as an Avionics System Engineer with EE background to help develop and integrate the avionics separation system for a brand new vehicle. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Provide engineering expertise in the area of design, development and test of avionics separation systems to support the functions of our launch vehicles
  • Develop, integrate and operate avionics separation systems for the launch vehicle to meet requirements, company standards and Federal Regulations
  • Develop connectivity and routing of wiring harnesses and mechanical configuration of separation assemblies
  • Execute separation systems from start-to-finish (sub-system design, component selection, installation, testing, data analysis, and report generation).  This will include resolving novel sep system challenges
  • Develop integrated testing plans and procedures that will meet production needs, adequately verify functionality and ensure operational needs
  • Support sub-system testing and anomaly investigations

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • BS in Electrical, Computer, Aerospace or comparable Engineering in a related field
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in relevant field
  • Professional knowledge of DO-160 or aviation familiarity
  • Experience in electrical design schematic and layout 
  • Experience in separation system design, vehicle integration or vehicle test
  • Experience using Unigraphics NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, Pro-E or any other 3D CAD modeling program
  • Familiar with wire harness routing design within a 3D CAD environment
  • Hands-on hardware integration experience including installation of components and harness and troubleshooting component, along with harnessing and sensor issues (including acceleration, pressure, acoustic, strain, position and thermal sensors)
  • Must be able to travel to test and launch site in Mojave and Florida
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 15 lbs

  • Experience in automotive, aerospace, aircraft, or civil dynamics or instrumentation
  • Experience conducting large scale and high channel count field tests with accelerometers, pressure transducers, strain gauges, thermocouples, and RTDs
  • Experience with integrated hardware/software system test methodologies
  • Experience in analog, digital or mixed-signal circuit design
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’



ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
