Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to support 2nd Shift. If you join us in this position, you will assist in producing machined parts for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. The ideal candidate will be an experienced CNC machinist capable of operating multi-axis CNC mills, lathes and manual machines. Parts fabricated on these machines will vary widely in material, complexity, and tolerance requirements.


This role will support current machining development efforts and future production volume requirements. Must be comfortable working in a cross-functional team including engineering, quality and manufacturing. The ability to critically assess designs for acceptable manufacturability is important along with excellent communication skills to assist engineering with input to drive to a high quality lower cost component. S/he must be able to quickly produce quality hardware with minimal support and with significant attention to detail. Prior experience in a fast-paced start-up manufacturing environment is required. Experience with new product introductions, lean manufacturing, cost and quality optimization along with tooling design is highly desired.


This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position for 2nd shift (2:00pm-10:30pm) at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Set-up and operate CNC and manual mills and lathes
  • Capable of holding tight tolerances associated with the machining of precision parts
  • Responsible for running one or more machines/machining centers
  • Assist in the development of programming and maintenance procedures and manufacturing practices
  • Ability to update CNC programs based on data from quality and other sources
  • Interface directly with internal customers or departments to deliver an estimate of completion and tooling requirements of individual machined projects
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting 3D & 2D engineering models
  • Experience machining large parts a plus
  • Assist with machine shop set-up and maintenance
  • Assist with other metals parts and fixture fabrication work, as needed
  • Support inspection of parts to ensure accuracy, including multiple alloys

What you bring

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3 years of experience as a CNC machinist role is required.
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement

  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work 2nd Shift (2:00pm-10:30pm)
  • Must be available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

….and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • Experienced with MS Office and ERP systems.
  • Certification related to Machining or Machine Tool Technology
  • 5-axis machining experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work in both R&D and production rate environments.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a "one person team"

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
