Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Avionics Integration Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will assist in developing and integrating the avionics system for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Provide engineering expertise in the area of design, development and test of integrated avionics to support the functions of our launch vehicles
  • Develop, integrate and operate avionics systems for the launch vehicle to meet requirements, company standards and Federal Regulations
  • Develop connectivity and routing of wiring harnesses and mechanical configuration of top-level assemblies
  • Execute flight instrumentation systems from start-to-finish (system design, sensor selection/customization, installation, testing, data analysis, and report generation)
  • Resolving novel instrumentation challenges
  • Develop integration and integrated testing plans and procedures that will meet production needs, adequately verify functionality and ensure operational needs
  • Support system level testing, engine testing, stage testing, launch and anomaly investigations

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • B.S. degree in Electrical, Computer, Aerospace or comparable Engineering in a related field is required
  • 3-5 years of experience in vehicle system design, vehicle integration or vehicle test OR a M.S. degree with 2+ years related experience
  • 2+ years of experience using Unigraphics NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, Pro-E or any other 3D CAD modeling program. Familiarity with wire harness routing design within a 3D CAD environment
  • Familiarity with wire harness routing design within a 3D CAD environment
  • Familiarity with mechanical enclosure design and analysis, including thermal, frequency, and tolerance stack up
  • Must be able to travel to test and launch site in Mojave and Florida
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 15lbs (unassisted)

  • Experience in automotive, aerospace or aircraft industries
  • Experience evaluating the operation and interconnection of large avionics systems, the required system analysis to support control loads as well as the associated instrumentation
  • Experience with integrated hardware/software system test methodologies
  • Background in mission planning tools and Data Products Dissemination
  • Hands-on hardware integration experience including installation of components and harness and troubleshooting component, along with harnessing and sensor issues (including acceleration, pressure, acoustic, strain, position and thermal sensors)
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
