Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Integration Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will assist in integrating liquid fueled rockets for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Create the integration plan for LauncherOne, from storyboard to the first rocket.
  • Work with teams from Structures, Avionics, and Propulsion to define the hardware being handed off from the manufacturing teams to integration. Identify requirements for integration.
  • Encourage designers to design for integration and efficiency.
  • Assist with top level budgeting, scheduling, and manpower estimates.
  • Work with the manufacturing team to produce rockets. Receive components from propulsion, structures, and avionics for integration.
  • Identify the tooling and support equipment needed to support integration (mechanical, electrical, electronic, fluids, etc). Define support equipment requirements and hand off the design to get worked, or design it yourself. Get it built. Redesign it until it works perfectly and supports high rate production.
  • Write, execute, and redline the integration instructions and test plans.
  • Act as test conductor during vehicle checkouts.
  • Project manage the build of the rocket when production starts, keeping the build on time, reaching out for long lead parts, and solving problems and nonconformances. Find root cause and prevent these problems on future builds.
  • Work with a cross functional team to gather data, order parts and support functions across the company.
  •  Negotiation and people skills will be necessary.
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Ability to perform detailed design of support equipment (mechanical, electrical, electronic, and/or fluids).
  • Experience with generating and executing test plans. Experience as a test conductor during vehicle powered-on internal checkouts, at test consoles during hardware in the loop tests or comprehensive system tests.
  • Knowledge of mechanical processes (welding, heat treating, anodizing, machining), composite material processes (layup, trim, bonding, and repair), fluid systems (cryogenic, RP-1, gasesous helium and nitrogen, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams, leak checks), avionics systems (boxes, harness installs, connector mating), and test processes for each discipline.
