Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Supplier Quality Manager. If you join us in this position, you will support the development and manufacturing of liquid based rocket engines for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. The ideal candidate will be experienced in Supplier Quality Assurance in support of Production and R&D efforts across a diverse supplier base and the related commodities. Successful candidates will have experience working in fast paced integrated product teams with development engineering, supply chain and internal quality. Experience in state of the art machining, processes and the supplier base will be necessary to lead a Grow/Sustain/Exit Supply Chain strategy that supports production efforts.  This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission


  • The Supplier Quality Manager will lead the effort on supplier vetting and performance
  • Provide the GD&T input into the drawings for released components working closely with the design and engineering teams for propulsion and structures
  • Provide technical expertise into the design of the components to reduce overall component costs
  • Provide supplier quality performance metrics
  • Support the supply chain team in sourcing evaluations and risk assessments
  • Assist the supply chain team with supplier corrective actions, technical and the delivery of quality products
  • Provide alternative sources and processes that will improve cost, delivery and or technical challenges
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in aerospace, mechanical or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years of increasing responsibility and complexity as a Manufacturing or Supplier Quality Engineer
  • 3-5 years of previous management experience required 
  • Experience in a production “ramp-up” environment
  • Demonstrated experience in new product introductions from development to production
  • Experienced in the vetting and qualification of suppliers
  • Creative problem solver able to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated experience in DFM techniques to support reduced cost and lean manufacturing
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
  • Must know how to determine proper evaluation of suppliers and materials at both low and high production rates
  • Experience in with working with pre/post design of parts and fixtures for use in production environment
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

… and you should probably have a bunch of these, too.

  • Experience in aerospace/aviation is preferred (will consider automotive, consumer goods, or similar)
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing techniques and development
  • Experience with new product introductions in support of Propulsion, Structures, Avionics and Flight Operations is highly desired.
  • Exposure to other multiple commodities and sources highly desirable
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
