Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Level 3 Engineer. If you joined us in this position, you would assist in overseeing all NDT activities for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.


Your Mission


  • Develop and maintain all NDT procedures
  • Develop all needed defect standards
  • Define NDT equipment and workcenter requirements
  • Work with engineering to define and document manufacturing defect tolerance requirements
  • Properly organize and maintain all NDT-related documentation
  • Ensure VO’s compliance to all applicable policies and regulations
  • Mentor and develop NDT inspectors. Provide/arrange all needed training
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members


What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…  

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering OR equivalant experience
  • 5+ years of experience working as a Level 3 Engineer in an aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Current NAS410 or ASNT Level 3 certification in radiographic and ultrasonic testing
  • Strong experience in composite manufacturing and inspection techniques

  • Strong experience in metallic processing and inspection techniques

  • Experience setting up automated/robotic NDT inspections

  • Familiarity with AS9100 and/or other relevant quality standards
  • Demonstrated innovation in process improvements, knocking down barriers, and tackling challenging problems
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • A generally quite high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

  • Experience setting up an NDT program in a startup environment
  • Current NAS 410 or ASNT Level 3 certification in dye penetrant, infrared thermography, and/or eddy current testing

  • Knowledge of AWS D17.1 and general welding principles

  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space

  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’


ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
