Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as an experienced leader to manage System Engineering, Integration & Test (SEIT). If you join us in this position, you will assist in managing the system engineering team, organize cross-departmental analysis and verification activities in addition to being an individual contributor for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership to a team of Systems Engineers of various experience levels
  • Participate in the hiring and performance review process of system engineering personnel, staffing and workload projections
  • Prioritize team activities to meet the program schedule along with supporting other departments’ deliverables
  • Be a technical resource for system engineering, analysis, verification, integration and test related to the LauncherOne rocket, 747 carrier aircraft and ground support equipment
  • Participate in fault and hazard analysis
  • Create, manage and verify system and sub-system level requirements on our current launch system and future concepts
  • Lead the thermal, aerodynamics and structural dynamics analysis team
  • Develop/lead efficient multi-disciplinary analysis cycles and associated process along with tool development
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with 10+ years of experience. Master’s Degree strongly desired.
  • Full lifecycle experience in the aerospace industry, including development and production programs
  • Extensive understanding of system engineering, integration and test practices
  • Experience in managing people and projects
  • Working knowledge of all major rocket sub-systems including structures, avionics, propulsion, and ground support equipment, GNC, software and payload accommodations
  • Experience with hardware/software development, integration, testing and analysis
  • Experience in coordinating or leading cross-functional integration
  • Deep knowledge of at least one major aerospace sub-system along with ability to be a hands-on contributor
  • Strong communication skills and highly organized
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 10lbs (unassisted)

  • Working knowledge of thermal, aerodynamics and structural dynamics analysis
  • Knowledge of configuration management best practices
  • Experience leading team focused on broad technical goals
  • Familiarity with industry test standards such as SMC-S-016 (formerly MIL-STD-1540), MIL-STD-810G, and RTCA/DO-160
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
