Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as the Quality Lead. If you joined us in this position, you would assist in managing all Quality activities on the production floor for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Quality inspection team on the production floor.

  • Interface with manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain to ensure issues are resolved, work is prioritized appropriately, processes are defined and implemented, and production operates effectively.
  • Define layout and build up all needed Quality workcenters.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain the Quality Management System. Provide training sessions as needed.
  • Participate in process improvements in a team-based environment.
  • Help develop and maintain required performance metrics.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams on product quality issues, escapes and development of corrective actions.
  • Perform and support process quality audits and internal audits of the Quality Management System.
  • Comply with safety regulations and promote a safe working environment.

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant manufacturing experience.
  • Creative problem solver able to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to thrive in a fast paced start-up environment
  • Solid understanding of the manufacturing methods, inspection techniques and quality issues involved in aerospace production.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Attention to detail and follow through.
  • Knowledge of AS9100 or other relevant industry Quality standards.
  • Advanced problem solving techniques (e.g., 5Y, Fishbone, PFMEA, etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 25lbs (unassisted)

  • Experience working in a start-up environment.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Proven hands-on experience in a composite and metallic aerospace structure fabrication, assembly and integration environment.
  • Knowledgeable about precision inspection and non-destructive inspection techniques.
  • Well-rounded for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
