Position Summary

Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Director of Safety. If you join us in this position, you will lead in defining, implementing, and maintaining the safety policies across all Virgin Orbit operations for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This position will serve as the lead safety representative for launch processing, manufacturing and all aspects of safety throughout the program and Virgin Orbit community and will have a dual reporting responsibility to the CEO and Board of Directors. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission

  • Defining, implementing, and maintaining the safety policies across all Virgin Orbit operations
  • Managing Environmental Health and Safety Team for all locations
  • Identifying hazards and minimizing risk to public and Virgin Orbit personnel
  • Managing safety risks and ensuring proper mitigations are in place prior executing operations
  • Perform site audits to ensure company and regulatory compliance
  • Understand applicable state and federal and regulatory requirements for safety, launch operations, hazardous waste, and industrial hygiene
  • Serving as the safety official required by 14 CFR §431.33(c) for Virgin Orbit to commence launch operations 
  • Reviewing launch operations procedures 
  • Ensuring crew readiness under nominal and off-nominal flight conditions
    • Applicable training has been completed
    • Monitoring and evaluating operational dress rehearsals to ensure they are conducted in accordance with procedures to ensure the readiness of vehicle safety operations personnel to conduct a safe mission under nominal and non-nominal conditions
  • Monitoring execution of launch operations for any hazardous situation, non-compliance with procedures or launch license
  • Lead and provide training for company’s emergency response plan
  • Oversee hazardous waste program to ensure waste is being disposed of according to all local, state, and federal regulations
  • Ensure completion of regulatory documents, reports and other recordkeeping requirements
  • Lead safety incident investigations, including determination of root causes and development of corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Responsible for assuring the facility’s compliance with all State, Local, and Federal HSE regulations including OSHA, EPA, DOT, and FAA

What you bring

If you want to join us, you’d better have all of these…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering discipline with 15+ years’ experience
  • 5+ years’ experience of EH&S permitting, processes, regulations and reporting required
  • Experience in Environmental, Health, Safety & Industrial Hygiene compliance required
  • Strong understanding / experience with manufacturing processes and test site environment required
  • Implementing EHS related programs such as OSHA
  • Experience in safe handling and shipping of hazardous materials
  • Hazard identification and risk management
  • Excellent time management skills are required
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
  • Physically able to handle items weighing up to 10lbs (unassisted)

  • 5+ years’ experience of management experience developing & implementing safety related programs in manufacturing and test environments
  • Experience designing, integrating, or testing launch vehicles
  • Working knowledge of liquid rocket engines
  • Experience with FAA launch licensing process
  • Experience performing System Safety analysis and associated government standards such as MIL-STD-882
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) status preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
  • The ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment.
  • Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space
  • Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
